Clinical Supervision

The course aims at enhancing the participants’ clinical knowledge, skills and professional growth so that their clinical practice is conducted in the most effective, efficient and responsible manner possible. The course focuses on facilitating the participants’ development of therapeutic skills which will enhance their effectiveness in working with families, couples and individuals. Family therapy core competencies that a family practitioner must possess will be examined. It will also explore interpersonal and/or intrapsychic domains which positively or negatively affect the participants’ competence in clinical practice. The participants will be required to bring their own cases of families with difficulties, for video- or audiotape review and discussion with the instructor, who is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. The supervisees can claim supervision hours when applying for Clinical Membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

Prerequisites for application

-

A recognized degree in social work, psychology, counseling or other health related disciplines
-
Actively involved in current clinical practice
-
Preferably with prior knowledge of family therapy

Live Case Demonstration by Dr. Wong Oi Ling

This course is designed for helping professionals who are interested in acquiring hands-on clinical practice in working with families. The live case demonstration provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to observe the assessment and treatment process in clinical interviews. The case formulation and post-discussion preceding and following the demonstration will enable participants to apply the systemic perspective to practice. Live family cases will be used as a platform for participants to acquire the relevant theories, understand the therapeutic process, and identify the interventions necessary to produce change in the family. The participants are welcome to bring their cases for live consultation.

Course Objectives:

  1. To acquire a systems perspective in case formulation
  2. To equip with skills to conduct family assessment/interviews
  3. To integrate observations with theory, resulting in appropriate interventions and decisions about treatment goals

Clinical Supervision by Dr. Wong Oi Ling

The course aims at enhancing the participants’ clinical knowledge, skills and professional growth so that their clinical practice is conducted in the most effective, efficient and responsible manner possible. The course focuses on facilitating the participants’ development of therapeutic skills which will enhance their effectiveness in working with families and couples. Counseling core competencies that a social service practitioner must possess will be examined. The participants will be required to bring their own cases of families with difficulties, for video- or audiotape review and discussion with the instructor, who is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. The clinical supervision group consists of approximately 8 to 10 supervisees, and all participants should have experience in working with families. Two to three supervisees will present cases in a 3-hour session, and each participant will present once during the period of training. All supervisees are expected to participate actively in class: giving constructive feedback to other participants and taking part in role-play etc. families.

Course Objectives:

  1. To apply family therapy techniques and interventions for a variety of presenting problems
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of their practice efforts
  3. To acquire enhanced sensitivity of cultural, gender and ethical issues in actual practice
  4. To reflect on interpersonal and/or intrapsychic issues which positively or negatively affect their conduct of clinical practice
